Statement

I am interested in the memory of the silk screen. The material quality of the mesh to hold onto pigment and remember the printers pull. I’ve begun to work through this in my series Pull and Revision.

Pull explores the painterly quality of screen print through the gesture of the pull. By using a series of divergent pulls I’m able to access the ghosts held in the screen and complicate the image.

In scanning these divergent pulls in I realized screen print’s potential as a variant matrix for animation. Although the final piece is a video, I entered the work from the perspective and language of a printmaker. At the same time I had experience and certain fluency in animation. In this way Revision is a translation between print and video.

It is this space between print and painting or print and video where I want the work to operate. In this new series I will continue this exploration and bring text into the prints: The hum of thoughts evaded in the mind. The work will have one foot in print and the other in painting, blurring the two as it moves text into abstractions.
